Overview
Ketewel is a right-hand reef on the east coast where the reefs switch from coral to a lava base, and it is every bit as intimidating. It throws spacious, angular pits that unfold over an uneven bottom, so this is serious water rather than a place to find your feet. If you want a more manageable ride, there are gentler reefs nestled among the black sand beachbreak on either side.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west, with south (S) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent. The southerly aspect means the standout sessions come on glassy mornings and spring highs, so the best windows are limited even though it breaks fairly often.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind. This one really wants high tide, since the uneven lava base needs deep water to be safe enough to take on, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Ketewel is an expert-level wave that takes real skill to master, so it rewards confident surfers who know how to handle a shallow, uneven reef. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on. Water quality can get dodgy after heavy rain.
