Kilcummin Harbour is a powerful left-hand reef that breaks over boulders. It turns hollow and heavy once there's some size, and only gets better the bigger it gets.
When It Works
The wave draws swell from northwest to north (NW-N), with north (N) the best match. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so it needs a decent pulse of swell to come to life. Consistency is on the low side, but it comes into its own when other spots are maxing out.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore southwest (SW) wind for the cleanest conditions, though it can also handle a westerly. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave that demands respect. Watch the currents and the power of the wave itself, and steer clear of the unforgiving rocks on the inside. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, and respect the locals in the water.
Access
Park behind the harbour wall, where there's free roadside parking. Be aware that water quality in Killala Bay is poor near most rivermouths.
