Overview
La Barra de Maldonado is a rivermouth break where sandbars form along an otherwise rocky stretch of coast, giving it a versatile playground of long lefts and shorter, steeper rights. Waves peel over a mix of rock ledge and sand, and by Uruguayan standards it can pack real punch.
When It Works
The break draws swell from the east through south, with southeast (SE) swell the best match. The rivermouth sandbars keep it fairly consistent, and it's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. An east-southeast swell that lines up with the right wind and tide is when it really turns on.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind, and any northerly direction tends to do the job here. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call. Mid tide paired with a northerly and an east-southeast swell is about as good as it gets. Keep an eye on the tide extremes, where rips can pick up.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable in powerful, punchy waves. Between the strength of the wave, the rips, and a rocky jump-in, it's really an experienced surfer's spot. Expect a busy lineup when it's on.
