La Fortaleza is a long, near-perfect but slow lefthand pointbreak near the fishing town of Santoña. The wave peels left over a bottom of boulders and sand, giving it a classic point shape when it comes to life.
When It Works
This is a wave that needs serious size. It's extremely inconsistent and only fires on the very biggest swells, with some years staying flat altogether. It draws swell from northwest to north (NW-N), and north (N) is the direction that lines it up best. The working range runs from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind to groom it. It favours low tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, and keep an eye on the strong rip that runs down the point.
Access
Parking is rarely a problem, with free roadside spaces nearby. There are no beach facilities, but the bars and shops of Santoña are a short walk away. Be aware the water can be fairly polluted from river runoff.
