La Govelle is a wind-sensitive reef setup just outside La Baule, breaking over uneven reef and sand with both lefts and rights on offer. The rights are usually the better bet, holding a cleaner line and improving as the swell fills in.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through northwest, with southwest the direction that lines it up best. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and only moderately consistent, so it pays to catch it on the right day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to groom the faces. The reef works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly wave, but expect a very busy lineup when it's on, with plenty of surfers coming over from La Baule.
Access
The spot is well signposted and has a car park, plus restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf school. Watch for sharp, mussel-covered rocks that sit close to the surface at low tide.
