La Izquierda, better known as the Spanish Left, is a famous left in Playa de Las Americas that peels over a lava platform and spins down the line for up to 100m. The take-off is sucky and hollow before the wave opens into a smackable wall with cover-up sections. Despite the name, there are also a few short rights on offer.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from west to northwest (W-NW), with northwest (NW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, giving a wide window from smaller days up to serious overhead surf. Everything breaks over an uneven reef, which shapes that hollow take-off and the walling sections down the point.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave on the right day, but it turns experts-only once it is overhead, so be honest about the size before paddling out. The lineup is always crowded and localism is a real factor, so read the pecking order first. Keep an eye on the inside, where shallow, sharp rocks sit just under the surface.
Access
There is a surf shop nearby, and parking is easy to sort, with a car park offering free parking alongside paid and roadside options.
