Overview
Las Bajas is a big-wave reef in the bay of Famara, breaking over a set of rocks about 200 metres out to sea. When sizable swells hit, an enormous peak stands up and breaks top to bottom over the uneven reef, peeling as both a left and a right. It is one of the most spectacular big waves in the Atlantic and has been towed into in recent years. This is a genuinely dangerous wave.
When It Works
Las Bajas needs real size to show its best form. It draws swell from west through north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the optimal direction. The wave is usable from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 9.1 m / 30 ft, so it only comes alive once a substantial swell reaches the reef.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind to groom the peak. It can break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is strictly a wave for expert big-wave surfers. Given how heavy it breaks over exposed reef, it suits confident, experienced hands rather than anyone still finding their feet.
Access
There is free parking along with roadside parking nearby. Facilities run to restrooms, camping, a lifeguard, and a surf school.
