Overview
Las Salinas is a fast, hollow right-hander that breaks over an uneven reef on Spain's north coast. It only comes to life a few times a year, but when it does, it's an excellent wave. The spot sits a long way from anywhere, so bring water and leave your valuables behind.
When It Works
Salinas needs serious size to get going: it starts working when big northwest swells max out the north coast. The reef draws swell from west to north (W-N), with northwest (NW) swell the best match, and the wave works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The reef can work through the whole tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Take extra care at low tide, when the wave gets very shallow.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave, and not one for the faint-hearted. Expect rips, urchins and reef right in your face, plus a busier lineup when the weekend locals show up.
