Lavadouro is a right-hand reef that breaks over a rock ledge. It could be a great right slab, but it faces northeast, so the tubes are rarely big enough to clear the rocks. At the far end of the beach, the rivermouth at Praia Melão throws righthanders that run down a rock and sand bank when there is enough swell. Watch for rivermouth pollution after rain.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south to southwest (S-SW), with south (S) swell the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft. Consistency is somewhat hit-or-miss, so you will want to catch it on the right day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, best left to surfers who can handle a slabby reef. The lineup stays quiet when it is on.
