Overview
Lucien is a sand-bottomed beach break on South Africa's South Coast, near Margate, the biggest resort town on the stretch and packed with amusements. The Margate seafront is known for a steep shorebreak wedge that bodyboarders enjoy through summer.
When It Works
Lucien draws swell from southwest through north to northeast (SW-N-NE), and it comes to life best on a straight east (E) swell. As a beach break over sand, the peaks shift with the banks and can serve up both lefts and rights. It's moderately consistent, so you get reliable enough windows without waves on every check. The break works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. The bank works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Lucien suits intermediate surfers comfortable reading a shifting beach break. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, though Margate's own surfers tend to head elsewhere.
