Overview
Macaronis is a machine-like left that many rate as the funnest wave in the Mentawais. It peels along a coral platform that curves into a deep bay, breaking over live coral at a fairly predictable speed. Rides open with a perfect pipe section and often finish on a ruler-edge quarter-pipe wall, so there's room for barrels, lip hits, and airs on a single wave. The reef is sharp and shallow, yet somehow feels less threatening than other spots of similar depth.
When It Works
The wave draws swell from south through west, with southwest the best direction, and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It's at its most fun around head and a half. Once it pushes past double overhead the tubes go square and it starts to max out. Get caught inside when the sets are pouring through and you'll usually be flushed all the way to the end.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind, though the wave stays fun even under a direct onshore southwest wind. It breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with mid tide the best call and a rising tide generally the better window.
Local Tips
Expect to jostle for position at the take-off, and note that it's easy to get pushed too deep when the swell is smaller. It's a good fit for intermediate surfers looking for a long, workable wall.
Access
There's a land camp on hand, along with good anchorage and a viewing tower for watching the lineup.
