Overview
Magheroaty Beach is a west-facing crescent of sand that peels as a beach break, offering both lefts and rights.
When It Works
It pulls in swell from southwest through north to northeast (SW-N-NE), and a northwest swell is the best match. The bank is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, breaking over sand.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind. The beach works across low, mid, and high tide, though mid tide is the pick and a rising tide is generally the better call. Take the track to the north end and you'll open up some extra wind options.
Local Tips
This picturesque beach usually stays quiet and is a friendly place for beginners, though it draws a wind crew. Watch out for currents. Around the corner, Balyness Strand picks up any north swell and stays offshore in a south wind; it's best reached from Falcarragh when things aren't lining up here.
Access
A track runs down to the harbour behind the dunes, suited to high-clearance vehicles, or a 4WD when it's wet. There's a car park with free parking.
