Overview
Maili Point is a fast, shifting left that breaks over dead coral a long way offshore. When a solid swell lines up with the trades, it throws screaming-fast lefts, though the peak moves around and regular clean-up sets sweep through.
When It Works
This reef comes alive on bigger swell. It draws energy from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best direction. The wave is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and it's moderately consistent, so the standout days come when a proper SW-to-W swell shows up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. Currents and sharks patrol the point and the takeoff shifts, so it rewards surfers who know it, and the locals are usually on it. Expect a busy lineup when it's on. If it's not your day, there are options nearby: Green Lantern picks up NW swells, and heading north toward Waianae you'll find Sewers' speedy rights, the protected reforms of Rest Camp in Pokai Bay, and Klausmeyers' lefts opposite the more popular rights at Makaha.
Access
Getting in and out is a real rock dance, so time your entry and exit carefully. There's a car park with free parking.
