Mantoloking is a low-key sand-bottomed beachbreak that offers a quieter alternative to the big-name, big-crowd spots further north. The peaks shift with the sandbar, so the setup changes from session to session, but on the right day it serves up fun rights and lefts. It is a decent, easygoing break that is fun on the right day.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from east-northeast through southeast to south, with south, south-southeast, and southeast the directions that suit it best. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, covering everything from waist-high days to the occasional overhead push. The season runs through autumn and winter, roughly September into March, when the sandbars and swell tend to line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind to clean it up, though the workable wind window runs from southwest to northwest. The sandbars come to life through low to mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits a wide range of surfers, from beginners through to experts, and it takes just about any board, whether you are on a shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, or bodyboard. The lineup stays fairly quiet with plenty of room to find your own peak, even in summer, though it can feel a little reserved. The paddle out is mellow most of the time, and Tony Giordano's Ocean Hut Surf Shop is the locals' choice if you need anything.
Access
Getting to the water can be a chore in summer thanks to beach badges and parking issues, but outside the busy season access is usually wide open. Keep an eye out for a shallow bottom and rip currents, and expect a generally clean setup.
