Mdumbe is a right-hand point on the Eastern Cape that breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand. When a good deposit of sand builds up against the rocks on the point, it ranks among the best waves in the area. It sits at a Transkei rivermouth, with Whale Rock just to the south picking up small, windless swells.
When It Works
It draws swell from east through south to southwest, with south the standout direction. A good-sized south swell is what really gets the wave wrapping into the point, and with the right sand in place it sucks hard off the outside shelf and fires toward the rivermouth, with rides that can top 700 metres. Mdumbe works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and is moderately consistent. Expect hollow pipe sections giving way to steady, smackable walls.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. It can break across low, mid, and high tide, but a rising tide is the better call and helps a good south swell wrap in.
Local Tips
This one suits confident intermediates who don't mind committing on the takeoff. The paddle out runs through a blind keyhole, so you can't see sets stacking up on your way out. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
