Overview
Melvich is a river-fed sand bay at the eastern end of a dune-backed bay in Sutherland, where a tannin-brown river feeds a sandbar that has built up over a stony patch of reef. The result is long, walling rights and shorter lefts over a bottom of sand and rock patches. It's the first of Sutherland's river-fed sand bays, a clear change from the reef-fringed coast of Caithness.
When It Works
The sandbar can turn out consistently good waves, breaking from around 2 ft up to head-high, and peaks can also form along the beach. It needs a slightly bigger swell to wrap in. Swell arrives from west through north to northeast, with north the best direction, and the spot works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Autumn is prime, with clean swells from September through November.
Wind and Tide
Look for south offshore wind. Melvich breaks through the tides, but high tide is best and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and it takes a range of boards, from shortboards and fish to longboards and bodyboards. The lineup is mostly quiet but can get busy in peak season, and it can feel a little reserved. Watch for rips by the river and along the beach when it's bigger, along with the rocks under the sandbar.
Access
Park in the car park behind the dunes on the west side and walk in, or reach the break by the Bighouse and over the footbridge. Parking is free, and there's camping nearby.
