Overview
Meñakoz is one of the most powerful right-hand reef breaks in Europe, a serious big-wave spot on the Basque coast that attracts the best surfers in the region. The wave rears up out of deep water and charges head down onto the reef, roaring into a bay set in a picturesque, amphitheatre-like arena that is ideal for watching the surf. It carries many of the hallmarks of a Hawaiian break, the power, the real danger and the unpredictability, but the cold water and jagged Basque coastline make it a rampaging Spanish beast all of its own.
When It Works
Meñakoz draws swell from the west to north, with northwest the best match, breaking right over an uneven reef. It is usable from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 7.6 m / 25 ft, though it only starts breaking properly at around 12 foot, so this is a true big-wave setup rather than an everyday session. The season runs through winter, roughly November to February.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south offshore wind. It works through mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an experts-only wave, ridden on a gun. The lineup is a specialist local crew who have spent years learning the reef's shifting peaks and moods, and they will not tolerate anyone inexperienced in big waves, with no tow-ins here either. Expect to do plenty of paddling, as the peak moves with every set. The hazards are very real: razor-sharp rocks, very strong rips, two-wave hold-downs, and a genuine risk of broken boards and broken bones. Just getting through your first session here counts as a good day's work.
Access
Access is difficult. There is free parking at the top of the hill, but no facilities on the beach itself. Sopelana sits close by with shops and a campsite if you want to base yourself nearby.
