Montgat is a beachbreak with a handful of peaks, from a short, hollow right to a longer, sectiony left. The waves break over a mix of boulders and sand, so there is variety along the beach depending on which peak is working. Rotonda is usually the pick of the bunch.
When It Works
Montgat pulls in swell from the northeast through southeast (NE-SE), and it comes alive best on an east (E) swell. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, giving you plenty of scope from small, playful days up to more substantial surf. When Rotonda is on, it is usually the best peak on offer.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west (W) offshore wind to clean things up. The beach can work through most of the tide, from low through high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
When it turns on, Rotonda draws a crowd of Catalan surfers, so expect a busy lineup on the good days. Crowding has become more of an issue over time, so be respectful to the local riders in the water.
Access
There is free parking and it is usually not hard to find a spot, but keep an eye on your gear as there have been break-ins here. To get there, take the A-19 and get off at the Montgat exit, where you will see the wave in front of you. Turn around, head down to the barrier, turn right, and you will pass under the road straight to the water. Facilities include showers and camping, and the closest surf shops are in nearby Masnou.
