Overview
Mount Irvine is a top-quality right-hand reef break that peels down the headland on the north side of a double-scalloped bay. The wave is a fast, racy wall running over a colourful live coral platform, offering pits to park in and lips to float along the way. It sits off a beach better known for safe family swimming and snorkelling. On the biggest swells, a left also breaks further down the reef.
When It Works
The wave switches on from November to April and goes completely flat through summer, when it never breaks. It draws swell from north to northeast (N-NE), with north (N) the best direction, and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Through the winter months it is moderately consistent, so you will find worthwhile windows when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind, which tends to hold offshore all day here. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, but a rising tide is the better call, improving as the water pushes toward mid and high.
Local Tips
Mount Irvine suits intermediate surfers. Expect a crowded, competitive lineup when it is on, with the local crew dominating the peak. The heavy local crew tend to jump off the rocks, but paddling out from the middle of the bay is the safer option. Be ready for a long paddle to reach the takeoff.
Access
There is a surf school and a surf shop nearby. Parking is free but scarce, limited to roadside spots.
