Muckros is a beachbreak tucked into a small bay on Donegal Bay, breaking over sand with both lefts and rights. When northwesterlies are wrecking the rest of Donegal Bay, this is the corner to head for.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from southwest through northwest, and comes alive on a swell with some west in it, with west the optimal direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to keep an eye on the forecast rather than turn up on spec.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to clean up the faces. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, but the peaks are best on a low incoming push, so a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
The peaks are approachable enough for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, and it can draw a crowd on days when it's the only show in town.
