Overview
My Khe is a sand-bottomed beachbreak on a long stretch of coast it shares with Non Nuoc, China Beach and Cua Dai. This 30km beach is backed by the verdant Marble Mountains, five isolated limestone outcrops riddled with caves, grottoes, pagodas and shrines. The waves here are on the mellow, below-average side: they break outside at low tide, fill up in the central trough, then reform on the shorebreak sandbars. Most of the time the surf is disorganised, choppy and short on power, but when a strong northeast swell lands on a glassy morning you can find some nicely tapered walls. Along the same stretch, China Beach tends to be the biggest and draws the most surfers.
When It Works
My Khe pulls in swell from north through east (N-E), with northeast (NE) the direction that lights it up best. Breaking over sand, it offers both lefts and rights, and it works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Consistency is moderate, so you'll get worthwhile windows without expecting waves every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west (W) offshore wind to clean things up. The bank works across low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners, and the lineup stays fairly quiet even when it's working.
Access
To reach My Khe, cross the Han River via the Nguyen Van Troi Bridge and head about 6km out of town. Just be sure you're at the right one: there's another My Khe Beach on Highway 24B, 15km from Quang Ngai in the Son Tinh District.
