Overview
Nam O Point is a left-hand point breaking over boulders and sand, and it's probably the highest quality wave around. The catch is that it won't switch on until the beaches nearby are maxing out. When it does come to life, it runs fast, steep and shallow, with the left offering more wall than barrel. The beachbreak next door can be worth a look too, with some protection from northeast winds behind the point, plus further peaks heading north past the rivermouth sandbars and up to the jetty.
One thing to know before you paddle out: the rivermouth pushes plenty of murky, polluted water into the lineup.
When It Works
The point draws swell from north through east, with northeast swell the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, though remember the point needs enough size that the surrounding beaches are already overloaded before it starts breaking. Consistency is on the thin side, so it's worth watching for the right window rather than counting on it.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest offshore wind. The point can work through low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The fast, steep and shallow nature of the wave makes this one best suited to intermediate surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
