Overview
Nii-jima's Habushiura is a consistent beachbreak that once hosted a WCT contest, and on its day it lines up and peels for long, hollow rides over sand. Both lefts and rights come through. The island has at least nine other named breaks tucked below the koga volcanic cliffs on either side, and Secrets, on the southeast corner, ranks among Japan's best waves. It's a super chilled-out place with hot springs and a slow pace of life.
When It Works
Habushiura is genuinely consistent, so the odds of finding a wave are good. It picks up swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with east (E) swell the best match. The break works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, giving it plenty of range from small, clean days up to serious size.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind. The beach can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Habushiura suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
Easy ferry links from the mainland make Nii-jima a straightforward stop on a Japanese surf trip, and there's a free campsite if you want to stay a while. Parking is sorted with a car park that's free to use.
