Ouano surf guide

Ouano is located out on the Passe d'Ouarai in New Caledonia. It’s known for its lefthanders, which can be pretty fun when the conditions are right. The spot can get a bit crowded with both locals and visitors, especially those staying in La Foa and taking the 20-minute boat ride to get there. This place is mostly for experienced surfers, as the coral and sea life can be a challenge.

The surf at Ouano works best with southeast and west swells, handling sizes of around 3 feet (approximately 0.9 meters). You’ll find it breaking over live coral, so make sure you’re careful with your fins. The left waves can pack a punch, especially at mid to high tides, and the preferred wind direction is from the east. The wave can deliver some decent tubes, but it’s important to note that this spot is really meant for expert surfers who know how to navigate the reef.

On the opposite side, there’s a right-hand wave that’s faster and heavier. Just keep in mind that it commonly gets blown out by the southeast trade winds. Morning sessions usually offer the best conditions, so if you can get out there early, you’ll likely have a smoother ride.
