Ouano is a left-hand reef break out on the Passe d'Ouarai, and one of New Caledonia's best lefthanders. It uncoils down the live coral at the higher tides, running through three sections of tubing. Directly across the pass sits its mirror-image right, which is faster and heavier and usually blown out by the southeast trades.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southeast through south to west (SE-S-W) and stays consistent through the season. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so there's a wide window of size to catch it firing.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. Ouano handles any easterly: a northeast wind hits the outside square-on while a southeast wind smooths out the inside, though clean morning glass is the real treat. It's best from mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is one for expert reef surfers only. You're paddling over live coral with abundant sea-life beneath your fins, so it demands confidence and respect. Expect a moderately busy lineup of locals and visitors when it's on.

Getting out here means a boat trip, roughly a 20-minute ride, with most surfers basing themselves in La Foa accommodation.
