Overview
Padang Galak is a black-sand beachbreak that peels both left and right over the sand. The dark sand can get foot-burning underfoot, and the bank won't hold much size above head-high. It's an approachable wave that suits surfers still finding their feet.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from south to west (S-W), with south (S) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and anything much bigger tends to overpower the bank. Consistency is moderate, so it rewards patience, but glassy mornings can serve up fun, cleaner peaks for improvers. The rivermouth shapes the sandbars here, though it can also push pollution onto the better peaks to the south.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up, and in the wet season the wind needs some north in it to groom the peaks. Tide makes a real difference: low tide tends to be mushy and forgiving, mid tide firms up into something in between, and a rising tide is generally the better call. Push into high tide and it turns into a dredging shore-dump.
Local Tips
This is a friendly beginner wave, and the lineup usually stays moderately busy when it's working. Early glassy sessions are a good bet if you want to grab a few away from the crowds.
