Overview
Passe de Boulari - Skatepark is a left reef break sitting slightly inside the wide Passe de Boulari. The name is a little misleading, because there's nothing mellow about it. This is a serious left that breaks over live coral, pitching, walling, and throwing shoulders down the line. It has a reputation as a grower, bending and building toward the end bowl section.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west, with southwest (SW) the best match, and it stays consistent enough to rarely go flat. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. On the smaller end the reef is barely dampened, so there's still plenty of punch, and once it climbs into the 6 to 8 ft range the wave turns thick and powerful. In between, expect a mix of caves, cracks, and cutbacks as the wall runs down the line.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who can commit, with fast minds and fast boards the order of the day. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, plus a bit more of a weekend crew. To the south lies an ocean playground of 14 more major passes, open to anyone with the right vessel and navigation skills to sample more of the New Caledonia barrier reef.
