Paul do Mar Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Paul do Mar is a high-quality right-hander breaking over boulders in front of the village of the same name, a picturesque strip of red-tiled roofs and white-washed walls squeezed between the deep blue ocean and sheer, verdant cliffs. Until the late '60s this small community was virtually inaccessible except by boat. The wave behaves almost like a beachbreak over boulders: depending on swell direction, rights can form along any part of the coast in front of the village, though the most reliable section sits at the southern end of the seaside road. These are considered some of the most challenging waves on the island, fast, hollow sprints with the occasional close-out.

When It Works

The spot draws swell from west through north (W-N), and a solid northwest (NW) swell is when it really springs to life, producing heavy, crystalline barrels pitching over the shallow rocky point. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, which on a good day means head-high to well overhead surf. Autumn and winter are the seasons to aim for, and it is a very consistent spot. The paddle can be some work on bigger days.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The wave handles mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. At low tide it gets extremely shallow and dangerous, while high tide combined with a big swell can be ferocious.

Local Tips

This is an expert-only wave best suited to a shortboard. Expect a small local contingent plus the occasional crew of visitors, and a moderately busy lineup when it works; it can draw extra people when it is the only place to surf on a small northwest swell. The lineup can feel reserved, but the locals are friendly and largely tolerant. There are no lifeguards and often few other surfers around, so whatever trouble you get into, you need the water experience to get yourself out of it.

Access

Follow signs to Jardim do Mar and continue through the tunnel to Paul do Mar. Getting into the lineup is a matter of good timing and a quick scramble over the rocks, and access can be tough. Watch out for shallow sections on the paddle-out. There is free roadside parking.
