Overview
Periscopes is a right-hand reef wave that breaks over dead coral.
When It Works
It needs a big swell with plenty of south in it to switch on. The swell window runs from south to southwest, with south (S) the optimal direction, and the wave is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, holding up to double overhead when it is really pumping.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. Periscopes breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call. Get out there early in the morning on a coinciding high tide, since the wave needs plenty of water over the reef to make it out of the barrel and onto the shoulder.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave and a natural-footers' tube-riding paradise, so expect a crowd chasing the same barrels when it is on.
Access
Reaching Periscopes takes a 40-minute walk, but once you are there it is only a short 100 m paddle-out.
