Overview
Playa Esterillos is a south-facing stretch of coast where patches of reef mix into a small sand bay and then open out into miles of beachbreak. Esterillos Oeste holds a wide range of waves, from beginner-friendly peaks to serious ones, and its A-frames are shaped by a combination of sandbars and reef. That mix keeps things moving: one peak fades as the tide shifts while a differently shaped one wakes up a couple hundred yards away, so conditions change fast and local knowledge counts for a lot. Worth knowing there are two Esterillos, Este and Oeste. Both are fairly average day to day but can genuinely shine when the stars align. At the northwest end of the beach, several reefs break calmly enough that longboarders get rides from the outside all the way through to the shorepound.
When It Works
Waves break over sand and rock, serving up both beachbreak and reef peaks with rights and lefts on offer. Esterillos draws swell from south through west-southwest and works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, with winter the season to plan around. On big swells, Esterillos Oeste turns into a washing machine and generates a current that will deposit you somewhere you'd rather not be. Small days are the opposite problem: when it goes to ripples here, the open beachbreaks to the south act as swell magnets and stay surprisingly surfable.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind, with a workable wind window running north-northwest to northeast. It surfs on mid and high tide, with mid tide the pick and a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Beginners through experts all find a wave here, and everything from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards makes sense depending on which peak you choose. The lineup stays fairly quiet with plenty of room to spread out, though it can feel reserved, so humility and respect go a long way. Watch for crocodiles, and take the currents seriously when it gets big.

Park at the beach and walk from there. Numerous spots are within walking distance.
