Overview
Playa Vega is a long beach break with several possible peaks, picking up just about all the available swell. Its NNW orientation keeps it more consistent than the surrounding spots, and the sandy bottom serves up both lefts and rights.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from west to north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind. The beach also handles the summer northeast winds, which helps keep it surfable when nearby spots get blown out. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Playa Vega suits intermediate surfers. The lineup is usually fairly quiet, though it can get occasionally crowded and picks up a few beachgoers through summer.
Access
There is free parking and good beach facilities, including restrooms, showers and a lifeguard, plus camping near the village. Be aware that the local stream is polluted by mining activity.
