Overview
Point Impossible is a right-hand reef break where two separate slabs of reef draw the waves in over a rock ledge. The walls lack speed and steepness, which makes it a friendly playground for mal riders and cruisers rather than anyone chasing a fast, hollow wall.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and is moderately consistent, so you get worthwhile windows without it turning on every day. When there is a bit of size, the Outsides hold up and the wave can rumble right through the Insides, cross the rivermouth, and carry on into the long stretch of beachbreak running up toward Breamlea. Nearby Bancoora has an offshore reef that occasionally cooks up some quality righthanders on a southeast swell and north wind combo.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to clean it up. It breaks on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, though talk of sharks and a sewage outfall in the area tends to keep it quieter than the breaks around it.
