Overview
Ponta Negra is a powerful beachbreak sitting at the end of a long, dead-straight beach that runs past an extensive lagoon system. The waves break over sand and peel both left and right.
When It Works
It draws swell from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW), with east swell the best match, and it is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Consistency is moderate. The break turns powerful when an east to southeast swell shows, though it often closes out or comes in messy.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. The beach can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly stretch. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on, and while it can pick up a crew on weekends, there is plenty of room to spread out.
Access
You will find restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand. Parking comes as a car park with free parking, plus roadside spots.
