Overview
Ponta Pequena is a right-hand point that peels over boulders roughly halfway between Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar. From a distance it looks deceptively mushy and easy, but when it lines up it can dish out extremely long rides where speed is essential, especially through the inside barrel section. A defined channel makes the paddle out less daunting than at some other spots.
When It Works
The point draws swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with west swell the best match, and it really turns on when a big west swell arrives. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 9.1 m / 30 ft, and as one of the most consistent spots on the island there is usually something to ride when swell is running.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. Low and mid tide both work, with a rising tide generally the better call, and on big west swells low tide is when the point is at its best.
Local Tips
This is a wave for expert surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup, and because the spot is so consistent it does get crowded at times.
Access
The walk in follows the rocky shore under the cliffs from either village, and most people start from Jardim do Mar because it is closer to the channel. Take care on the way in: the cliffs are prone to landslides and falling rocks. There is free parking.
