Overview
Pools is a reef break that peels in front of the Abaco Inn, breaking over shallow live coral. It comes into its own on days when the swell isn't big enough for Rush Reef, and it throws up both lefts and rights. Sitting behind the outside reefs, it stays filtered and manageable, which also makes it easy to eyeball before you paddle out.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northeast through southeast, with northeast the direction that lines it up best. In a northeast swell the lefts are usually the pick, though rights show up too. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it's moderately consistent, so expect worthwhile windows rather than surf every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to clean it up. Tide matters here: mid to high is essential, and a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
Pools suits intermediate surfers, with the shallow coral rewarding a bit of confidence in your positioning. Because it's so easy to check and surf, expect a moderately busy lineup on the good days.
