This is a reef coast at heart: most waves here break over coral, so the surf rewards patience, positioning, and respect for shallow bottoms rather than the forgiving beach setups of sandier coastlines.
North and northeast swells do most of the work, with east and southeast angles opening additional options on the Atlantic-facing sides. Because the islands sit exposed to Atlantic groundswell and winter cold-front energy, the strongest waves usually arrive from a north-through-northeast direction. Offshore conditions most often line up with wind from the southwest, though west and south winds also clean up particular breaks depending on their orientation. Mid tide is the reliable window nearly everywhere, and many spots also hold through low and high water, so tide is rarely the limiting factor once a swell is running.
Eleuthera is the most established surf island in the group. North Eleuthera holds the deepest concentration of quality, anchored by Surfers Beach and Whale Point Cut near Upper Bogue and James Point at James Cistern, and it leans toward more advanced surfers over reef. Farther down the island, Central and South Eleuthera each contribute a standout in North Palmetto Point and Rock Sound, both better suited to experienced surfers who can read a reef.
The Abacos offer a different flavor. Hope Town is the busiest cluster, with reef and beach options like Crowd Control, Garbanzo and Tilloo Cut that mostly suit intermediate surfers and even a few beginner-friendly days, all keyed to east swell. North and Central Abaco add Drownies and Rushin Rights near Cooper's Town and Willawahs off Treasure Cay, while the remote Grand Cay reefs at Frenzies and Northeast Walkers pick up clean north swell for those willing to travel. Spanish Wells adds Egg Island near Current to the mix.
Overall this is intermediate-to-advanced territory. Reef bottoms, coral, and a handful of expert-only breaks mean The Bahamas suits surfers with some experience more than first-timers, though a few gentler days exist around Hope Town. Typical rideable size runs from roughly waist-to-head high up to double overhead on the bigger days, so a versatile shortboard quiver covers most conditions, with a step-up worth packing for larger north swells.
