Overview
Radiation Point is a right-hand pointbreak sitting at the easternmost tip of the island, breaking over boulders. The wave is inside the grounds of the giant Voice of America transmitting station, so the huge antennas are your landmark. From here down to Porto Alegre there's an interesting run of right pointbreaks, though those need a decent swell before they start rolling.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south to southwest, with south the best match, and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It's a moderately consistent setup, helped by the fact that even local southeast windswell wraps in with enough size to ride, so there's usually something on offer.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. A southwest wind is cross-offshore on the biggest outside section, which keeps that part of the point rideable too. The wave can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Once the tide gets too high, the waves go fat and inconsistent. Watch out for shallow rocks.
Local Tips
Best suited to intermediate surfers, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet.
Access
Parking is restricted. Before driving out to the point, ask permission at the gate, though it's usually refused, in which case the alternative is to paddle around.
