Red Strand (Dirk Bay) Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Red Strand, also known as Dirk Bay, is a very protected bay that comes into its own in winter, when the breaks further west are maxing out. Waves break on an unsurfable outside reef and reform into hollow peaks over sand, peeling both left and right.

When It Works

Red Strand draws swell from south through west, with southwest swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Winter is the time to catch it, when the bigger, more exposed spots to the west are overpowered. Keep in mind the bay can have strong rips.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northeast offshore wind. The beach works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The reforming peaks suit intermediate surfers most.

Access

Follow the signs for Red Strand or Galley Head off the R598, then park by the beach. There's free roadside parking, plus restrooms and camping.
