Roca Puta Surf Forecast Guide

Roca Puta is a serious, heavyweight right-hander that breaks over an uneven reef on the rocky end of the headland, rolling down the side of a rock-lined sea wall on the east side of the beach at Orrua. This is a big-wave proposition for experienced riders only. On smaller swells, boulders pepper the lineup, but once it reaches head high there is just enough depth for the wave to spin through for up to 200 yards. It earns a good rating and a reputation as a genuinely dangerous spot.

When It Works

Roca Puta draws its swell from northwest to north (NW-N), with north (N) the best match. It is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it needs a very large, clean swell to show its real form. The break truly comes alive when big swells arrive: on anything over ten feet it becomes a serious proposition, drawing top surfers from across the Basque region while crowds line the road to watch. It starts to close out around 18 to 20 foot. The season runs through autumn, roughly September to November, and it is not ridden many times a year.

Wind and Tide

Look for a south (S) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef favours high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

Bring a shortboard or a gun, and treat this as an expert-only wave. Expect a busy lineup with a large local crew when it is on, and an atmosphere that runs somewhat reserved. Humility and respect go a long way here, and inexperienced surfers are not tolerated.

Access

Getting out means a well-timed paddle off the rocks, and both entry and exit are difficult. Parking is limited to a car park with free parking and roadside spots overlooking the break, which fills up fast when the wave is working. There are no beach facilities. Watch for very strong rips, nasty rocks, and the raw power of the waves themselves, and note the water can be moderately polluted, especially after rain.
