Rosie Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Rosie Bay is a neat little cove serving up punchy, powerful, sectiony peaks over an uneven bottom of sand and rock. Mostly lefts, and a real departure from the rest of Tofino's beachbreaks. It sits directly across a headland from Cox Bay, which gives it good protection from south wind but also brings some backwash into the mix. This is a shortboarding wave at heart, the kind of place you go to practise airs or land one big move per wave.

When It Works

The bay draws swell from south through west, and it works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, roughly waist to head high. Autumn and winter are the seasons to watch, with September through February the core window. It's a modest wave overall rather than a standout, but the punchy sections make it worth a look when the swell lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for glassy mornings or northeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from north to east. It breaks best on low to mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

Bring a shortboard or a fish. The punch and the sections reward intermediate and expert surfers, and it's not the place to be learning. Expect a moderately busy lineup, with weekends and summer days getting packed and weekdays staying quiet. Paddling out is minimal effort, the water is clean, and the main thing to respect here is simple: don't turn your back on the ocean.
