Salani Left Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Salani Left is a fickle south-coast left that peels over a forgiving but shallow live coral reef. When a clean, lined-up swell arrives it throws fast, spitting barrels that gain momentum and open up the further down the line you go, which makes it a favorite for goofy-footers and traveling barrel hunters in Samoa. Compared with the neighboring right, it handles less size over a less user-friendly reef and breaks far less often, so it rewards patience and the right conditions.

When It Works

The wave draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southeast (SE) the best match since it wraps in and lines the reef up. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and is only moderately consistent, so expect to wait for the setup to come together. Winter, roughly May to August, is the window to aim for. On a good day the ride can run about 150 m down the line, and holding your speed while picking the right track is essential to make the most of the barrel.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef comes to life from mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert-level wave best suited to a shortboard, and the lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved. Paddling is manageable on average days but turns into a workout when it is pumping, and you will want to avoid the shallow inside shutdowns and dodge swinger sets on the way back out.

Access

Getting out is a short five-minute boat ride, and there is a car park with paid parking. Keep the shallow reef in mind, since bouncing off it is the main hazard.
