Thorli surf guide

Thorli is a popular surf spot in Iceland, known for its deep paddling channel which makes it easy to catch waves without the hassle of duck diving. This location attracts surfers aiming to ride decent swells, particularly when conditions are above chest high. While the spot can experience flat spells during the summer months, winter typically brings more consistent waves. It’s around a 30-40 minute drive out of Reykjavík.

When it comes to surfing, Thorli works best with southeast swell directions and can handle swells up to about 1.5 meters (5 ft). The waves break over boulders, creating a point break that typically moves to the right. You can expect long, workable walls during bigger swells, although smaller days may lead to crumbly cutback corners. The preferred wind direction is northwest, and it can work well at any tide level—low, mid, or high. Overall, this spot is suitable for intermediate surfers looking for a fun session.

Accessing Thorli is straightforward. From Reykjavík, take highway one and make a right turn to Thorlakshofn about 15 minutes into the drive. Continue for another 15-20 minutes straight through the town toward the lighthouse. Since Thorli is rarely crowded by Icelandic standards, you might find some space even on busier days.
