Overview
Santa Maria de Oia is an excellent but challenging left-hand reef on a picturesque, rugged stretch of the Spanish coast. When it breaks, it throws up powerful walls with barrel sections over an uneven reef. The setting stays quiet, with virtually no beachgoers and no significant pollution.
When It Works
The wave needs a head-high northwest swell before it starts breaking, so it is only moderately consistent. It draws swell from west through north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the best match, and works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind. The reef breaks around mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for expert surfers only. Strong rips and a large rock that appears in the middle of the wave make it a serious proposition, and the lineup only fills with experienced chargers when it is on.
Access
There are no facilities at the spot, but there is free parking and finding a space is not a problem.
