Shidashita Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Shidashita is a sand-bottomed beachbreak that hosts pretty much the most competitive lineup in Japan, where the country's best shortboarders come to ply their trade. It works on the same conditions as Torami and can be a genuinely high-quality wave, breaking both left and right with real punch and the odd barrel when it turns on. Over the southern breakwall sits a separate break called Seagull Mai, where constantly dumped old fishing nets help build up the sandbars.

When It Works

The bank draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast the direction that lights it up best. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, giving it plenty of range across small and solid days, and it holds up as a consistent option you can count on.

Wind and Tide

Look for west offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is intermediate-level surf, and the lineup runs very busy given its reputation, so expect plenty of company and sharp talent in the water when it's on.

Access

All facilities are on hand at Taito, including restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. For parking you'll find a free car park, paid parking, and roadside options, though summer can be a hassle and often means paying the local surf shops to park.
