Silveira Garopaba Surf Forecast Guide

Silveira Garopaba is a rock-bottom right-hand point that many Brazilians rate as the best wave in the country. The swell wraps around a grassy headland over cobblestone rocks and sand, drawing long, hollow walls down the point. The setting does a lot of the work too: a tropical valley between two forested headlands, a small lake nearby, mountains on the horizon, and cows grazing on the flats behind the beach while you sit in the lineup. Locals call this stretch of coast the "Brazilian Hawaii", and the wave earns it, mixing warbling barrel sections with softer shoulders where you can throw one up on the lip. Think Rincon and Trestles blended together. Alongside the point, the middle of the beach offers good surf options of its own.

When It Works

The point takes swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), and south and southeast are the best match for the wrap around the headland. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and the right corner holds size well when it gets big. Autumn and winter deliver the best conditions, though the point breaks year-round.

Wind and Tide

Look for west (W) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running west to west-northwest (W-WNW). East or northeast is the one direction that really ruins it, and a light afternoon bump can actually add fun by turning the crumbling sections into launch ramps. The big headland keeps it rideable through most of the day. Tide-wise it works from low through high, with a rising tide the better call, and this is one of the few spots around that favors a higher tide.

Local Tips

Shortboards suit the wave, and it has something for beginners through to experts. Expect a very busy lineup when it works, with a friendly atmosphere on the beach and plenty of hard charging in the water. Rare quiet days do happen, so keep an eye on it while you're around and be ready to move. A dawn patrol on a Saturday or Sunday morning, after the big nights in town, is your best bet. Paddling is easy, though the paddles get long as the size comes up. Watch for rocks in the right corner, and the current can get bad on bigger days.

Access

Access is easy, and the water is fairly clean for the most part. Just watch for thorns in the grass if you're walking barefoot.
