Sopelana Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Sopelana is a very consistent beachbreak with several peaks breaking over sand, and one of the busiest surf spots in Spain. A good semi-permanent peak sits at the western end of the beach. Water quality is usually fine, but estuarine and stormwater pollution can be an issue after heavy rain.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from west through north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and the peaks throw both lefts and rights. Consistency is a real strength here, and while it works year round, autumn through spring — roughly September to May — is the best stretch.

Wind and Tide

Look for a south (S) offshore wind. The beach can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the semi-permanent peak at the western end holds up well on higher water.

Local Tips

Sopelana suits intermediate surfers and takes just about any board — shortboard, funboard, fish, longboard, or bodyboard all work. Expect a busy lineup of capable surfers, and the crowd can be competitive. Keep an eye on powerful waves and strong rips, and be ready for a heavy paddle out.

Access

You can get in from either end of the beach, and every facility is on hand: restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop, with camping nearby. Parking is metered in summer, with paid parking, roadside spots, and a car park available.
