Strandhill Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Strandhill is a constantly shifting sand beachbreak right out in front of the promenade, breaking both left and right. There's more variety here than a single peak: hollow split peaks in the middle of the beach, a long right-hand boulder point called Bluerock at the northern end, and more waves down towards the rivermouth in the south. Everything depends on the shape of the sandbars, and when the sand cooperates it turns on some excellent days. The water is very clean. If you have a boat, there's a challenge out off Blackrock Lighthouse and empty peaks over on Coney Island.

When It Works

It draws swell from west through north, with northwest (NW) the best match, and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, roughly waist-high to overhead. Consistency is good and it breaks all year, but big winter swells overpower it and summer tends to go flat, so autumn and spring are the seasons to aim for.

Wind and Tide

Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Beginners are well catered for here, and there are always a few surf schools around in summer. Shortboards, fish, funboards and longboards all have a place depending on the day. The lineup is usually fairly quiet and the atmosphere a little reserved, though a good day with a large local surf population and Sligo City close by can pack it out. Politeness and competence in the water go a long way with the locals.

The paddle out isn't far, but there can be current once it gets bigger, and rips build with size. There's a lifeguard through the summer season. Don't surf alone.

Access

There's a car park next to the beach with free parking, though space gets tight through the summer months. You'll also find restrooms, showers, camping and a surf school. High tide cuts off access against the barrier, so stay off the beach at high tide.
