Tarfaya surf guide

Tarfaya is a frontier town located on the coast of Cape Juby, set apart by its unique vibe. While it sits behind Fuerteventura, which blocks a lot of the northwestern swells, it still has its moments. There’s a small beach break by the Casama fort, but it often experiences flat conditions. The area is known for being quite windy, so it's worth checking the north-facing coast that can pick up those NE wind swells, especially along the shipwreck-laden northern beaches.

When it comes to surfing in Tarfaya, the optimal swell direction is from the north. Swell from the southwest and north can also work, allowing for wave heights around 1ft (0.3m) and up. The waves break over uneven reef and sand, creating beach breaks that offer both left and right waves. It’s best to surf during low, mid, or high tide. Intermediate surfers will find this spot challenging yet enjoyable, especially with the preferable wind blowing in from the southeast.

Keep in mind that while the surf can be fun, conditions can vary quite a bit. The local scenery is interesting, with shipwrecks adding to the atmosphere, and the windy days can provide some excitement on the water. Always check the surf reports and speak to other surfers in the area for the best insight on the daily conditions.
