Overview
Ténia is a left-hand reef break that peels over live coral off Tenia Island. It isn't the hollowest wave, but it makes up for that with long, carvable faces and crumbling lips, and it handles plenty of size, packing a punch as it shifts around a long lineup. A separate left and right also break on the reef that protects the island, so there are options once you're out there.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through southeast (SW-SE), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, holding everything from smaller days up to serious size. It breaks consistently, so you can count on finding rideable waves when the swell is running.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to groom the faces. The reef works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Take care of the strong currents that run on dropping tides.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediates, who will handle the average days here. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Getting out here is part of the trip: it's a half-hour boat ride from the mainland at Bourake. You can camp on Tenia Island if you want to stick around.
