Overview
The Bowl is a heavy left-hand reef that peels over live coral off Tongatapu. When it turns on, a thick bowl section bends around the reef for an exceptional ride, and it can hold almost any swell size, with a shape reminiscent of Hawaii's Ala Moana. The take-off sits right next to the outside peak of Lighthouse, and it's strictly a wave for experts.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through southwest, with southwest (SW) the best match. A straight south swell is what gives the left its length, so that's the direction to wait for. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and being somewhat inconsistent, it doesn't break all that often, but the sessions it delivers are worth the wait.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind. The Bowl works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. It's much safer at higher tides; low tide is only rideable if you're overly keen.
Local Tips
This is expert-only territory, both for the heavy bowl and the shallow coral beneath it. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's working.
